Artists, curators and Exhibition Openings for Soil Shroud Room and “Heart of Matter”Check out what’s to come through this season’s projects/installations that merge art and science through soil explorations that bridge connections to other disciplines, and develop unique relationships from common and uncommon ground.Exhibitions:
Soil Shroud Room
The Soil Shroud Room, presented by ecoartspace, brings together textiles previously submerged in soils from around the world as a material expression of the minerals and microorganisms that connect us to ancestral lands. Since 2023, over thirty artists have participated in online Soil Dialogues, where the concept of burying and transforming textiles began. This summer visitors to Swale House are invited to contribute to this collaborative work, to bury, alter, and stitch together textiles into an ever-growing, collectively sewn “soil shroud.”Heart of Matter
Heart of Matter brings together twelve eco-artists whose practices explore the relationship between feeling and the physical world. Together, their works resist the notion that emotion is immaterial, instead asking what it means to grieve, wonder, desire, and belong through the specific weight and materiality of the world. Featuring work by Curious Orange, Carlos Rigau, Jessica Bardsley, Sonja John, Samara Smith, Romilly Rinck, Noga Cohen, Lola Lefrancois, Jaleeca Yancy, Patrick Costello, Laura Grace Chipley, and Walker Tufts, who were all 2025 artists in residence at the Arts Center at Governors Island.Built for the people and by the people, we invite you to become part of the USI platform, with your feedback, inquiries, participation in events, and collaborations.
June Free Soil Testing - Governors Island
We have partnered with our wonderful friends at Earth Matter to provide monthly Free Soil Testing workshops at their Compost Learning Center. The next upcoming event one is happening on Saturday, June 27th from 12 noon - 4 pm.
Soils are one of our most important resources, but they can become contaminated as a result of industrial activity and legacy pollution. Common soil contaminants, such as lead or arsenic, can cause negative health effects to folks who work and play with soils, with young children at particular risk.
Finding soil contaminants requires special equipment – that’s where we come in! Our state-of-the-art handheld pXRF analyzer quickly screens soil samples for heavy metals content and we can let you know if remediation is recommended. Remediation involves covering contaminated soils with layers of clean soils, compost & mulch, and can be performed on your own.Soil First Aid Free Soil Testing
For Friday, May 8th, were in Brooklyn at the Pratt Dye Garden testing soil from 12 noon - 4 pm in collaboration with Sam Asher as part of the Soil First Aid testing event, so come through. Because this event includes educational workshops, the format will be a little different than usual - Testing will happen in batches from 12:00 - 12:30, then half an hour of group interpretation and discussion, followed by a project presentation from 1 - 2 pm, then more batch soil testing, interpretations/discussions in the same tempo until 4 pm.
About the project: Soil First Aid is an interdisciplinary soil testing project in Pratt’s Dye Garden, examining the existing conditions of the garden’s soils along the North wall and analyzing the impacts of three improvement techniques: compost, red clover cover crops, and biochar. Through the use of chemical soil testing and soil chromatography, Soil First Aid reveals the graduality of human-perceived change in a system dominated by microbes through quantitative analyses and visual chromatograms. May Free Soil Testing - Snug Harbor
We are at Snug Harbor Botanic Garden to provide monthly Free Soil Testing workshop as part of their plant sale! This event is happening on Sunday, May 3rd from 12 noon - 4 pm.

SWALE House, Governors Island, NYC
SWALE/USI artist-in-residence Gisela Sanders Alcántara is thrilled to invite you to a special summer series as part of my residency with the Urban Soils Institute at Swale House on Governor’s Island/Pagganuck.
This season, we’ll activate the space as a site for healing sound and collective grief-tending through Voz—our shared voice meditation practice. Through sound, breath, and intention, we will build a participatory altar using natural elements and gather in a circle to explore our relationship to the land, our inner rhythms, and the emotions that arise in this time of ecological transformation.
The site just next to Swale House (Nolan Park House 11) will serve as a meditative ground to listen, chant, and hold vibrational space, connecting our bodies to the soil as living archives of memory and resistance. As part of this project and if you want to share, I will also begin collecting reflections and stories shared by participants, recorded audio/video with the prompt: Listen to living entities around you and note who and what is communicating? My interest lies in highlighting the intersections of disability, land-based healing, and environmental consciousness.
These sessions are open to all who feel called. Come as you are, and if you’d like, bring a small object or natural offering to contribute to the altar.
Let’s gather in community, attune to the Earth’s pulse, and offer our voices to the healing of ourselves and the planet.

Instructions:
1. Gather a plastic bag with about a cup of soil from your yard or garden, surface to 4’’ depth works best. Please clearly identify the bag so you can find it. Out of courtesy for other attendees, there is a maximum of 3 samples per person
2. Bring your sample to our drop-off station, located on the porch at SWALE House in the Nolan Park area of Governors Island. Location is indicated on the map.
3. We will test your sample for heavy metals content within 10 minutes and have it waiting for you on the porch at the pick-up table.
Sample drop-off deadline: 3:30 pm
Why Test Soil?
Soils are one of our most important resources, but they can easily become contaminated as a result of industrial activity and legacy pollution. Common soil contaminants, such as lead or cadmium, can cause negative health effects to folks who work and play with soils, with young children at particular risk.
Fortunately, remediating soil that is contaminated with heavy metals can be inexpensive and doesn’t require professional services when contamination is found – that’s where we come in! Our state-of-the-art handheld pXRF analyzer quickly screens soil samples for heavy metals content, and lets us know if remediation is recommended.
The Newburgh Urban Farming Fair
The Urban Soils Institute is proud to participate in The Newburgh Urban Farming Fair for the third year in a row! Come visit us and support the wonderful efforts of the Newburgh Urban Food and Farm Initiative to combat food insecurity in underserved communities. Also make sure to get your soil tested!
The Newburgh Urban Farming Fair is a celebration of fresh food, local vendors, crafts, and farm fun. Attendees will learn about urban farming and gardening and participate in “how-to demonstrations” about what they can do in their own yards and neighborhoods.
