DirtySexyCool: A Dialog on the Art and Science of Soil

by Dr. Anna Paltseva and Sally Bozzuto

“Why, when and in what context did soil science and art merge horizons? ... Such cross-disciplinary activities are gaining recognition as scientists, artists, educators, and environmentalists are developing a visual vernacular for the outermost skin of the earth.” - Dr. Gerd Wessolek, soil scientist, professor, and artist

Soil is not just dirt, it is a living system and an integral part of life on earth. This webinar will explore artworks that use soil as material and subject intersecting topics of environmentalism, sustainability, bioremediation, materiality, temporality, embodiment, biological cycles of death and renewal and more.

Artist Sally Bozzuto will discuss her own work with dust, soil, and living media and provide creative insight on artworks by other practitioners and soil scientist Dr. Anna Paltseva will expand on scientific aspects of artworks including her own collaborative work with artists. Bring a soil sample to learn how to “feel” your own soil. At the end of the webinar, we will host a Q&A session to answer all the burning art and soil questions you have.

This event will be recorded so if you cannot make this time you can register and a recording will be emailed to you afterward.
